Public Health Reform to Improve Epidemic Contingency Mechanism

Since the foundation of the People’s Republic of China, the public health system has made important contributions to ensuring people’s health, maintaining social stability, and promoting economic development. However, China’s public health system is still facing many problems and challenges.

With the COVID-19 pandemic under control in China, Chinese healthcare authorities are seeking to further reform the public health systems. Despite the success of public health system in China in combating COVID-19 pandemic, some weaknesses in the system have also been exposed therein. On May 24, 2020, President Xi Jinping called for reform of the public health system in a discussion with National People's Congress deputies from Hubei Province.

Wang Kun, an associate researcher in the Department of Public Health Strategy Informatics, Institute of Medical Information, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, has analyzed the development process, current situation, and problems of China’s public health system and put forward strategies for the construction of the public health system in the new era in her academic article entitled Development History, Current Situation, Problems, and Strategies of Public Health System Construction in China in Chinese Journal of Public Health.

On the condition of comprehensive analysis of the weaknesses and flaws in the current public health system in China, Wang et al. have proposed some suggestions for improving the public health system in the new era, such as building a health service system combining medicine with prevention, optimizing the mode of financial investment, establishing a multi-channel financing mechanism, strengthening the construction of talents in public health system, enhancing public health informatization, and improving the public health legal system.
