On the sinicization dimension to Zhao Puchu’s Humanistic Buddhism

LI Xiqolong

【Abstract】The fundamental attribute of religion sinicization is that it is a long-lasting process. In contemporary China, religions still face the issue of sinicization. Specifically, it is necessary for religions in China to recognize the Chinese nation, the Chinese nationality and the Chinese core values and cultures. Zhao Puchu’s Humanistic Buddhism thought manifests the Buddhist recognition of contemporary China. It acculturates the core content of Humanistic Buddhism (the Buddhist philosophy of human care and the dharma of human practicing Bodhisattva path) in the context of socialist culture. By doing so, it shows the Chinese Buddhism’s integration with the core values of socialism, as well as its recognition of the socialist political system and the cause of modernization. Therefore, Chinese Buddhism advocates the benefit of self and others, the solemnization of land with decent behaviors and the bestowal of interests and happiness on all creatures with sentiments. It advocates the commitment and dedication to the highest and overall interests of the nation and the people, and to the economic development, cultural prosperity, social harmony, ethnic unity, national reunification, and friendly interactions with foreign countries of contemporary China. Zhao Puchu’s thought of Humanistic Buddhism can provide a useful model for religion sinicization in contemporary China.
