【Abstract】In practical applications, sometimes, the actual performance of a magnetically-saturated controllable reactor (MSCR) is not in conformity with the designed one, making it unable to play a good role in balancing reactive power and controlling voltage. In this paper, from the view of changes of winding turn number, winding circuit resistance, the saturation flux density of the core, and tap ratio, the reasons why MSCR characteristics, such as magnetic saturation, harmonic characteristics, and power loss, are inconsistent with designed characteristics are analyzed. Firstly, the relationship between MSCR parameters and magnetic saturation is analyzed. Then, based on the above relationship, the variation of the fundamental wave, harmonics, and total harmonic distortion of MSCR working currents with each parameter is analyzed. At the same time, the influence of parameter variation on active power loss is analyzed in combination with the calculation formula of active power loss. Finally, according to theoretical analysis results, the reasons for the MSCR performance not consistent with the designed one are explained and verified with experiments.
