Impact of grandchild care on intergenerational support expectation of grandparents: an empirical analysis based on the CHARLS (2015) data
China Rural Survey,2019,No. 04
Under the dual influence of market forces and population aging, grandchild care and intergenerational support have become one of important characteristics of labor division of modern families. This article empirically analyzes the impacts of grandchild care on intergenerational support expectation of grandparents by using the data of China Health and Pension Tracking Survey. The results show that grandchild care has a significantly positive impact on intergenerational support expectation. The grouping results show that first, grandchild care has a slightly lower impact on the intergenerational support expectation for rural household registration grandparents than urban household registration grandparents. Second, grandchild care has a significant effect on intergenerational support expectation of grandparents aged 55 and above. As the age increases, the marginal effect shows a ladder–like growth trend, but the effect is not significant for the grandparents aged under 55. Third, grandchild care has a positive impact on the intergenerational support expectation of grandparents with different living arrangements. For grandparents living with their children, the impact on the intergenerational support expectation is greater than that for grandparents living without their children.
