A study on the relationship between frontier ethnic groups and state development in the Han Dynasty: from the perspective of historiography
China's Borderland History and Geography Studies,2019,Vol 29,No. 04
In Shi Ji (史记), Han Shu (汉书) and Hou Han Shu (后汉书), there are many biographies about the frontier ethnic groups, which systematically describe the relationship between the frontier ethnic groups and the development of the state. Through the analysis of these historical texts, it can be seen that the formation and development of multi-ethnic China was a very complicated historical process. The history of multi-ethnic China’s national development and multi-ethnic China’s state development and frontier construction are requisite to each other. Many ethnic groups are integrated into a multi-ethnic state. The connotation of state was thus constantly expanded. At the same time, the connotation of multi-ethnic China’s frontiers had also changed as a result of the ethic integration.
