Transgenic Crop Breeding Way of Future

Transgenic technology has developed fast since the advent, contributing to the considerable progress in the aspect of species, acreage, food processing types and applicable people. Hence, transgenic technology has become a powerful driving force of new agricultural science and technology revolution and an important direction of technological innovation. Attracted by transgenic technology, transgenic crop breeding research in China emerged and quickly became the leading edge of modern agricultural science and technology development.

HUANG Dafang from the Biotechnology Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences briefly reviewed the development history and fundamental experience of transgenic crops breeding in China for near 30 years. In addition, he analyzed the problems and challenges faced by China’s transgenic crop breeding. Furthermore, based on the discussion, he put forward some suggestions for the development of transgenic crop breeding in China.

As the study suggests, China has established an innovation and industrialization system of transgenic crops breeding with its own characteristics and comparative advantages. Since Program 863 was carried out in 1986, transgenic crop breeding research in China has developed rapidly: making a breakthrough in gene clone, genetic transformation and other key technologies; actively promoting the industrialization of transgenic insect-resistant cotton; starting special programs to support the independent innovation of transgenic crop breeding so as to enhance the innovation capacity of cotton, rice, corn and other crops; adhering to scientific assessments and approval according to the law to ensure the security of transgenic crops.

According to its development history, the study points out that the development of transgenic crop breeding in China is attributed to the country's strategic support, the independent innovation of core technology, scientific management methods, as well as the market-oriented commercialized breeding.

Certainly, the problems can not be ignored. Due to the negative impact of "transgenic security" controversy, the government fails to promote the application of transgenic crops, leading to a decline in technological competitiveness and a passive position both in the domestic market and the international market.

In the face of challenges, the study proposes several suggestions for the development of transgenic crops breeding in China: the government should promote the industrialization of significant research results, seize the market opportunities and develop the most urgent crops; should accelerate the implementation of major projects and innovation to improve the innovation level of agricultural science and technology; should strengthen transgenic science communication and positive guidance of public opinion so as to reverse people’s irrational thinking about transgenic crops breeding.

The research findings are published in the 6th issue of Chinese Journal of Biotechnology, 2015. The bilingual version has been launched already.
