Does the diplomatic visiting affect a country’s export trade?
【Abstract】Based on the extended trade gravity model, this paper analyzed data from China’ s visiting history with 100 trading partner countries from 2010 to 2017, and empirically assessed the impact of this on the export of trading partners to China. The results of the paper showed that the visit of heads of state has a spillover effect on exports. Moreover, four comparisons can be made: visits of high-level heads of state have more spillover effect on exports than visits of lower level heads of state; bilateral exchange visits have more effect than unilateral access visits; unilateral active visits also have more effect than unilateral reception visit; and finally, bilateral visits have more effect than multilateral visits. Additionally, it was found that the impact of visits of the heads of state on trade has a national heterogeneity. The above results have passed various robustness tests. This paper provides evidence for understanding the relationship between diplomacy and trade between countries, and provides theoretical support for the importance of countries in creating a harmonious international trade environment through diplomatic communication.
