China Journal of Highway and Transport , the 1st in the field of road transport, is supervised by China Science and Technology Association and sponsored by Highway and Transportation Society of China. It is the most authoritative academic journal of the highway transportation industry. Launched in 1988, it has been walking in the forefront of road traffic technology development. Its scope covers the achievements in road construction and transportation, including road engineering, bridge and tunnel engineering, traffic engineering, road building and machinery engineering. Study on Vehicle Model for Vehicle-bridge Coupling Vibration of Highway Bridges in China

To design an analytical vehicle model for studying vehicle-bridge coupled vibration, based on the design vehicle loads in the Chinese bridge design code and a combination of a large amount of survey data and their equivalent analysis, parameters such as geometric size, mass, stiffness, and damping of the vehicle model were determined. These parameters were compared with those of vehicle models adopted worldwide. Subsequently, four simply-supported reinforced-concrete bridges were selected, and finite element models were established. Based on the numerical simulation of vehicle-bridge coupling vibration, the effects of vehicle parameters, such as stiffness and damping, on the dynamic impact factors of the selected bridges were studied. The effects of different vehicle models on the dynamic impact factor were also compared. Finally, field tests were conducted on a real bridge in Hunan Province, China, and several trucks with different numbers of axles were used. The measured dynamic impact factors were compared with the simulated impact factors obtained using the proposed vehicle model. The results showed that the dynamic impact factor decreased with increase in gross vehicle weight but increased with rise in the overall stiffness of the vehicle. With the increase in overall damping, the dynamic impact factor first decreased and then increased. In addition, the stiffness or damping of a single axle had a small influence on the impact factor. The gross vehicle weight was the main factor that was attributable for the difference in the impact factor induced by different vehicle models. The simulation results were in good agreement with the test results, indicating the rationality of the proposed vehicle model and its parameters. The proposed vehicle model can be used for numerical simulation of the dynamic response of bridges subjected to design vehicle loads and related research, as well as in the estimation of the dynamic loading effect on bridges subjected to different types of vehicles with similar weight.

Wind Tunnel Test of the Aerodynamic Characteristics of a High-speed Train Running on a Steel Truss Bridge Under Crosswind

In order to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of a high-speed train running on a long-span bridge, the moving train wind tunnel test system was adopted, and tests were performed to examine the aerodynamic forces of a train model under crosswind. A 1/30 scale model of the truss bridge was constructed based on the Hutong Yangtze River Bridge in addition to a CRH3 train. The train models were driven by a servo motor synchronous driving system, which can facilitate the two-way runs of the models. The maximum speed of the train model was 15 m·s −1 with an effective acquisition time of 0.7 s. It was possible to wirelessly determine the aerodynamic forces acting on the train models with the help of a Mini40 transducer. The aerodynamic characteristics of the train under the influence of different wind velocities and train speeds were measured for an equivalent stationary train model and a moving train model respectively. The results show that the aerodynamic coefficients of the train models varied for the stationary test and moving test. The difference of the side and lift coefficients appeared to be more notable compared to the rolling coefficient. It was observed that the truss structures had an obvious shielding effect on the aerodynamic characteristics of the moving train, which can significantly reduce the aerodynamic coefficients when the train traveled onto the truss bridge from an uncovered area. The reduction was substantial as the yaw angle increased. For the train moving inside the truss bridge, the aerodynamic coefficients varied for different driving directions. The variation was clearly observed with an increase in the yaw angle. For a yaw angle greater than 40°, the side coefficient of the moving train in the forward direction was smaller than that of the backward direction, while the lift coefficient in the forward direction was larger than that of the backward direction. In contrast, the difference between the rolling coefficient in the different driving directions was not completely clear.

Damage Evaluation Method for Hinged Joints in Slab-girder Bridges Using Online Dynamic Responses

In order to solve the condition evaluation problem of hinged joints in fabricated slab-girder bridges, a quantitative damage evaluation method by using the online dynamic responses of bridges is proposed, in which the shape difference index for the spectra of dynamic responses under moving vehicles is defined and united with the modal frequencies to construct the objective functions. The integral decrease in the lateral beam stiffness is defined as the damage index. Finite element model updating based on the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm is used to identify the parameters of the hinged joints in fabricated slab-girder bridges, so that the hinged joint damage can be located and quantified. Vehicle-bridge coupled vibration analysis is used to compute the online dynamic responses of bridges. When computing the spectrum shape difference indexes, the first-order vertical bending frequency should be avoided, and the frequency band including the transverse bending and torsional frequencies should be chosen. By numerical simulation, the influence of factors, such as damage locations, damage extents, lateral random locations of moving vehicles, running speeds, and road unevenness, on the damage identification results of hinged joints is analyzed, and the identification results of the main beam and hinged joints in the presence of damage are further analyzed. The results show that the proposed method for the damage evaluation of hinged joints has a strong anti-noise ability. The damage evaluation results depend less on the lateral random locations of moving vehicles, running speeds of vehicles, and road unevenness levels. Damage in single or multiple hinged joints with different extents can all be identified using the proposed method, and the error is relatively small. At the same time, damage in the main girders and hinged joints can be simultaneously identified with good precision. A fabricated slab-girder bridge Is tested and the condition of the hinged joints Is evaluated by using the proposed method. The results agree well with the in-situ actual damage status, which proves the reliability and effectiveness of the proposed method for hinged joints from the view of practical application.
