Shear Behavior of Bolted Connections with Steel Plate in Assembled Timber Structures

To understand the shear performance of bolted connections with steel plates in assembled timber structures and accurately calculate the shear capacity, specimens were designed according to the structural characteristics of glued laminated timber connections with steel plates. At the same time, considering the effect of the ratio of timber thickness to bolt diameter, bolt spacing, and bolt arrangement in parallel or staggered arrangements, the shear behaviors of glued laminated timber connections with steel plates were tested. In the paper, 51 specimens belonging to 3 classes and 17 groups were designed. The shear failure mechanism of the whole process from loading to failure as well as the influence of the gasket on the shear behavior of the connectors were studied by push-out test and finite element method. The results show that the suitable ratio of timber thickness to bolt diameter is 7.5 for the single bolted glued laminated timber connection with steel plates. With the increase in timber thickness to bolt diameter ratio, the failure mode of the bolt connection gradually transforms from “single hinge” to “double hinge”. For the multi-bolt connection, the bending degree of bolts decreases from top to bottom. In addition, the glued laminated timber is damaged at the pin groove area. With the increase in spacing of the bolt arrangement, the initial stiffness of the structure decreases and the ultimate load increases. With the increasing number of bolt columns, the specimen evolves from single crack on the middle column to cracks on both sides. The ductility of the specimen is best when two columns are arranged. When the number of bolts is the same, the ductility performance of the bolts arranged in parallel is better than that with the staggered arrangement. However, the bearing capacity of the bolt specimens with staggered arrangement is better than that with the parallel arrangement. The finite element calculation results of the shear bearing capacity of the connectors are similar to the experimental results. However, the calculation results based on the empirical formula are conservative. Further, the bolt gasket has less influence on the shear bearing capacities of the connectors.

Quasi-static Test and Numerical Simulation Analysis for Seismic Performance of Fabricated Assembled Bridge Piers Based on Bellows Connection

The purpose of this work was to study the difference in seismic performance between fabricated piers with grouting bellows connection and overall cast-in-place piers, explore the mechanical properties of prefabricated double-column piers under earthquake action, and observe the damage mechanism of the nodes. The displacement hysteresis curves of the fabricated piers with grouting bellows connection and the overall cast-in-place piers were obtained through a quasi-static test. The contrast studies on the seismic performance of fabricated piers with grouting bellows connection and the cast-in-place piers were conducted via displacement ductility analysis, energy dissipation capacity analysis, and residual displacement analysis of the specimens. The resulting hysteresis curve shows the following: ① The test phenomenon of the grouting bellows test piece is basically consistent with that of the overall cast-in-place test piece. The maximum bearing capacity of the assembled specimen is 6.7% lower than that of the cast-in-place test piece. ② The two skeleton curves show that the errors of yield load and ultimate load are less than 10%. The yield displacement is the same but the ultimate displacement of the assembled specimen is 3% lower than that of the cast-in-place test piece. The ductility coefficient of the grouting bellows specimen is less than that of the overall cast-in-place test piece. ③ The residual displacement shows that the maximum residual displacements of both specimens are approximately 55 mm, but the grouting bellows specimen’s residual displacement rate is greater than that of the cast-in-place specimen under the same hysteresis displacement. ④ By means of the integral method, the energy dissipation capacity of the two test specimens can be compared. When the hysteresis displacement reaches 80 mm, the difference value of their energy dissipation is maximal, which is equal to 10.87 kN·m −1. The total energy dissipation capacity of the grouting bellows is approximately 10% less than that of the cast specimen when the maximum displacement is achieved. From the testing results, it is seen that the requirements of the overall cast-in-place piers are met as long as the strength of the assembled joint can be guaranteed under the same design parameters.
